Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE)
UNDP Crisis Bureau guides UNDP’s corporate crisis and fragility-related strategies and vision for crisis prevention, response, and recovery. Within the Bureau, the Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding and Responsive Institutions (CPPRI) team leads and coordinates UNDP’s corporate approach to Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE). Since 2014, UNDP has designed and implemented conflict-sensitive and evidence-based development solutions for PVE at the global, regional, and country levels, in more than 40 countries worldwide. UNDP delivers programmes to meet the priorities set out in the Secretary General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, and UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
The focus of UNDP’s preventive approach is to look at the relationship between peaceful societies and inclusive development, rule of law and human rights, anti-corruption, good governance, civic engagement, and political participation, addressing the horizontal inequalities that fuel radicalization that can lead to violent extremism.For any inquiries relating to UNDP’s PVE work, please contact Ms. Nika Saeedi at nika.saeedi@undp.org.
Partnership with Sharing Perspectives Foundation (SPF)
The ongoing digital transformation, which has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, demands new solutions for PVE programming and policy making. The move towards online solutions has also resulted in traditionally in-person community engagement interventions for PVE to also shift to or be complemented by online channels, often presenting additional challenges to PVE practitioners.
In response to a UNDP staff survey—which demonstrated a strong need for strengthening skills, building knowledge, and identifying tools to better facilitate online engagement for PVE—UNDP partnered with the Sharing Perspectives Foundation (SPF) in 2021 to develop this OCEA resource hub. SPF has nearly a decade of experience in online community engagement and intercultural dialogue programming using online tools only. As a Virtual Exchange provider, SPF has worked with over 10,000 young people in 1000s of online dialogue sessions. SPF has trained and coached hundreds of online dialogue facilitators and programmes have been integrated at 80+ local organisations across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
